Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, transparent trays that fit precisely over the teeth. Each aligner applies controlled forces to move the teeth incrementally, with the patient progressing through the series, typically changing aligners every one to two weeks until the planned result is achieved.
Treatment is planned digitally using 3D scans of the teeth. Before treatment begins, both the patient and their parents can see a simulation of the planned tooth movements and the expected outcome.
For adolescent patients, aligners are designed with the specific considerations of teenage life in mind; they are removable for eating, sport, and special occasions, and are virtually invisible when worn.

Clear aligners are suitable for many adolescent orthodontic cases, but they are not appropriate for everyone. The most important factor in aligner success, particularly for teenagers, is compliance. Aligners must be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day to achieve the planned tooth movements. Patients who remove their aligners frequently or for extended periods will not progress through treatment as planned.

A frank conversation about compliance expectations is part of the aligner consultation at Lusk Orthodontics. Where aligners are not the most appropriate option either clinically or from a compliance perspective, fixed braces will be recommended instead.
When worn consistently, clear aligners can achieve results comparable to fixed braces for many cases. The key difference is compliance — fixed braces work regardless of the patient’s behaviour; aligners only work if they are worn. For motivated teenagers, aligners are an excellent option. For those who may struggle with compliance, fixed braces are likely to produce a more reliable outcome.
Replacement aligners are available. The process for obtaining a replacement and any associated cost will be explained at the outset of treatment.
Yes. In some adolescent cases, aligners are used in combination with functional appliances, TADs, or orthodontic elastics to achieve corrections that aligners alone would not manage.
