How Clear Aligners Work

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, transparent trays that fit snugly over your teeth. Each aligner applies carefully controlled forces that gradually move the teeth through a series of incremental stages. You progress through the series — typically changing aligners every one to two weeks — until the planned tooth positions are reached.

Treatment is planned digitally using 3D scans of your teeth. Before you begin, you will be shown a simulation of how your teeth will move and what the expected outcome looks like.

The Treatment Process

1. Consultation and assessment
   A thorough clinical examination, photographs, and 3D digital scans are taken. Your suitability for aligner treatment is assessed and all options are discussed.
2. Digital treatment planning
   Your case is planned using specialist software. You will be shown a digital simulation of the planned tooth movements and the expected result.
3. Aligner fabrication
   Your custom aligners are manufactured and typically ready within two to three weeks.
4. Treatment
   You wear each aligner for the prescribed number of days, then progress to the next. Check-up appointments are scheduled at regular intervals to monitor progress.
5. Refinements
   If further tooth movements are needed to achieve the ideal result, additional aligners (refinements) are planned and fabricated.
6. Retention
   At the end of active treatment, retainers are provided to maintain the result long-term. This is a critical and lifelong phase of orthodontic care.
