Lingual braces use the same principle as conventional fixed braces — brackets bonded to the teeth with a wire running through them — but positioned on the inside surface of each tooth. Because they face inward rather than outward, they are not visible when you smile, speak, or laugh.
The brackets used in lingual orthodontics are custom-made for each patient using digital impressions and precision manufacturing. This level of customisation is what allows lingual braces to achieve accurate, complex tooth movements from the inside of the arch.

Suitability is assessed on an individual basis. In some cases — particularly where bite correction requires significant vertical movement or where teeth are very short — alternative treatments may be more appropriate.

Aesthetics: Lingual braces are completely invisible from the outside. This is their primary advantage.
Adjustment period: Because the brackets are on the inner surface of the teeth, there is typically a short adjustment period for the tongue, affecting speech and comfort in the first two to four weeks. Most patients adapt fully within this time.
Cleaning: Oral hygiene around lingual brackets requires attention and a consistent routine. Detailed guidance and appropriate cleaning tools are provided at the start of treatment.
Clinical expertise: Lingual orthodontics is a specialist area that requires specific training and experience. Not all orthodontists offer lingual treatment.
Consultation and assessment
A full clinical assessment is carried out to determine whether lingual braces are the right treatment for your case.
Digital records and custom manufacturing
Highly detailed impressions or digital scans of your teeth are taken. These are used to custom-fabricate your lingual brackets and initial wires to a precise prescription for your individual tooth anatomy and planned movements.
Fitting
Lingual brackets are bonded to the inner surface of your teeth in a single appointment. Initial discomfort and a short adjustment period for speech are normal.
Active treatment
Regular appointments are scheduled for wire changes and adjustments, similar to conventional fixed brace treatment.
Retention
On completion of treatment, retainers are provided to maintain your result. Fixed (bonded) retainers placed on the inner surface of the teeth are particularly discreet and are commonly used following lingual treatment.

Most patients experience a temporary change in speech — particularly with ‘s’ and ‘t’ sounds — during the first few weeks. This resolves as the tongue adapts. The vast majority of patients report no noticeable difference to others after this period.
