In some cases, children around the age of 6 can benefit from interceptive orthodontic treatment, which means carefully timed early treatment designed to guide healthy growth and prevent more serious problems later.
When early treatment is appropriate, it is usually limited, focused, and designed to support normal development.
The most common approach is palatal expansion, using a small device called an RPE (Rapid Palatal Expander). This may sometimes be combined with short sections of braces or aligners to guide a few teeth into better positions.

Some children with breathing-related symptoms, such as snoring or paediatric sleep apnoea, may benefit from palatal expansion in selected cases. Widening the upper jaw can sometimes support better tongue posture and airway function.

However, orthodontics alone does not cure breathing issues. The most common causes are enlarged tonsils or adenoids, which may require assessment by an ENT specialist.
Dr Erfan Salloum works closely with leading ENT consultants in Dublin to ensure children receive the most appropriate and complete care.
In certain cases, myofunctional therapy (specialised exercises for the tongue and oral muscles) can be a valuable addition to orthodontic care.
We do use simple and easy tow ear Myofunctional appliances usually used after palatal expansion and Dr Salloum collaborates with an excellent myofunctional therapists when this extra support is needed.
There is increasing discussion online about airway orthodontics, and unfortunately, misinformation can sometimes lead to unnecessary treatment.
At Lusk Orthodontics, our philosophy is always evidence-based and balanced.
Not every child needs an expander, and expansion is not a universal solution. But for the right patient, early intervention can make a meaningful difference.
Another common reason for early orthodontic treatment is a crossbite, where the upper and lower teeth do not meet correctly.

Advances in orthodontics mean that older treatments such as facemasks are now rarely required.
In rare cases, a tongue tie may affect normal tongue posture and development. Where appropriate, Dr Salloum can refer children to trusted colleagues for assessment and a simple release procedure if needed.
