A full set of fixed braces is not always necessary — or appropriate — for children undergoing early orthodontic treatment. In many cases, a limited phase of fixed brace treatment targeting only a specific group of teeth is all that is needed to address a particular problem or to prepare for more comprehensive treatment later.
The 2×4 sectional brace is a commonly used form of limited fixed treatment that places brackets on four front teeth (the upper or lower incisors) and bands on the two first molars on either side — using just six points of contact to deliver targeted, controlled tooth movement in the front of the mouth. It is one of the most efficient tools in early interceptive orthodontics.
Sectional braces are typically used in children as a second phase of early treatment — most commonly following palatal expansion — or as a standalone early intervention where a specific problem affecting the front teeth warrants correction without treating the full dentition.
Common applications include:
Following palatal expansion — after a period of palatal expansion, the upper front teeth may need to be aligned, spaces closed, or individual tooth positions corrected. A sectional brace on the upper four front teeth, anchored to the first molars, allows this to be achieved efficiently before the remainder of the permanent dentition has fully erupted.
Correcting an anterior crossbite — where one or more of the upper front teeth are biting behind the lower teeth (in front), a sectional brace can tip or torque the affected tooth or teeth forward into the correct position. This is an important correction to make in a growing child, as a dental crossbite can cause abnormal loading of the affected teeth, wear on the lower teeth, and, if skeletal, a progressive shift in jaw growth.
Aligning a displaced or newly erupted incisor — permanent incisors do not always erupt in the correct position. A sectional brace allows a displaced or rotated front tooth to be guided into alignment without committing to full fixed brace treatment.
Creating space or closing a significant gap — where a specific spacing issue in the front of the mouth requires correction at an early stage, a sectional brace provides the control needed to close or create space precisely.
2×4 sectional treatment is carried out with the same care and precision as full fixed brace treatment. Brackets are bonded to the front teeth and bands are placed on the first molars; a wire running through all brackets allows controlled tooth movement over the treatment period.
The treatment phase is typically short — usually three to six months — reflecting the limited number of teeth involved and the targeted nature of the movements required.
Following sectional treatment, the braces are removed and the child enters a monitoring or retention phase until the remaining permanent teeth have erupted and further comprehensive treatment, if needed, can begin.

Brackets on the upper front teeth are visible, though they are the same size and type used in standard fixed brace treatment. Many children find that wearing braces — even partially — is very much accepted and normalised among their peer group.
In many cases, yes — the 2×4 phase addresses a specific early problem, with comprehensive treatment planned later once the full permanent dentition has erupted. The 2×4 phase makes subsequent treatment simpler and more efficient by addressing the problem at the optimal time in development.
As with all fixed braces, some mild soreness after fitting and following wire changes is normal and settles within a couple of days. Most children adapt quickly and manage very well.
